Q:
Dildos, dongs and vibrators....aren't they
all the same thing??
A:
No. The main difference between them
is that dildos have no power source while
dongs and vibrators do. There are
other differences as well and I'll cover
each of them briefly.
Dongs
have been around for centuries. While
the shape has remained fairly consistent
over the centuries, the materials that dongs
are made of have evolved from the early
leather or wood into today's modern selection
of silicone, cyberskin, e-glass and plastic
polymer. Most dongs will be made of
this plastic polymer including the silicone
and cyberskin types. Some people have
described this plastic polymer as being
a "mystery rubber" so it is highly
recommended that you use a condom with these
toys. Two key reasons you want to
use a condom with dongs are:
(1)
the plastic polymer will often have an ingredient
called phtalates (THAY-lates). While
this is a common addative, it can seep into
the skin over time so it is best avoided.
As there are no federal guidelines that
deal specifically with addatives in adult
toys, why take the chance? Put a condom
on your toy and avoid the hassle!
(2)
it makes clean up a lot easier.
Dildos
and vibrators are a fairly modern invention
and were originally designed to be used
as medical devices to treat "hysteria"
in women!
Dildos
and vibrators will have some kind of power
source, ie: batteries, wall plug in,
rechargeable etc. They are designed
to perform two main functions: they
provide continuous vibration on either the
clitoris or inside the vagina, and, they
allow for the feeling of "fullness"
that some women need in order to achieve
orgasm.
Dildos
and vibrators come in a variety of sizes
and shapes. To preview some of them,
go back to the Adult Toys section and click
on Clitoral Stimulators and Combination
Vibes.
Q:
Do I need to have a lubricant if I'm using
toys or do I just need to have it on hand
for those times when I'm not producing enough
lubrication on my own?
A:
Yes, a lubricant should be part of your
toy chest at all times! To get more
information on lubes, visit the section
entitled Sex Toys 101--it will give you
a very detailed explanation of the uses
and benefits of lubricants as well as a
listing of recommended lubes and their various
applications.
